Wildlife Sanctuaries in Himachal Pradesh

Climate wise, the state of Himachal Pradesh has a forest cover and topography, and is gifted with a vast range of flora and fauna. For a long time this state is known for its beautiful forests, wildlife, wilderness and landscapes. From the total geographical area of about 55,670 sq km in Himachal Pradesh, 37, 691 sq km of area is covered with forest.

Currently there are 2 National Parks, 3 Games Reserves and 32 Sanctuaries in Himachal Pradesh. These Parks and Sanctuaries consist of several species of animals, birds and plants and among them include 463 species of birds, 64 species of mammals, 516 species of aquatic fauna, 43 species of reptiles and 3240 species of plants. Himachal Pradesh is valued for its reputation and discloses a noticing diverse eco system for all the wildlife enthusiasts, romantic tourists and indefatigable trekkers.

Chail Sanctuary is spread over an area of 110 sq km at the foothills of the great Himalayan Mountains. This sanctuary has a vast forest cover and has several species of birds and animals of major attraction. This sanctuary is famous for its densely populated Oak and Pine trees.

Chail sanctuary mainly consists of large mammals which include leopard, goral crested porcupine, Indian muntjac and rhesus macaque. Some of the other species in this sanctuary include wild boar, Himalayan black bear, black napped hare, sambar and common langur.

Great Himalayan National Park is situated in the Seraj Forest Divison of the Kullu District. This Park has a breathtaking beauty and is blessed with biological richness. This Park has a rare variety of Western Tragopan and also has 30 species of mammals and 200 species of birds. Snow leopard, Wolf, Rhesus macaque, Leopard, Ibex, Blue Sheep, common langur, goral, serow, muntjac, Himalayan Black Bear and Musk Deer are some of the major wildlife species found in this Park.

Some of the other Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries in Himachal Pradesh are Simbalbara Sanctuary, Churdhar Sanctuary, Kanwar Sanctuary, Renuka Sanctuary, Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary, Daranghati Sanctuary, Majathal Sanctuary, Manali Sanctuary, Pin Valley National Park, Nature Park Kufri and Nature Park Manali.
