Churdhar Peak is located at a height of about 3647 meters and is among the highest peaks in Himalayas. In the ocean of temperate forests it is compared to the Oasis of Alpine area. This sanctuary was named from the Chur Peak where there is a statue of Lord Shiva on the top of this peak. There are several multi colored and agile Monals in the adjoining forest. Churdhar sanctuary was been notified on 15th of November 1985 and covers around 5616 hectares of area. This sanctuary is said to be one of the oldest sanctuaries in Himachal Pradesh.
This sanctuary is located amidst the dense woodlands and has a rich variety of flora and fauna. At the point of the local extermination Churdhar still contains a huge habitat for Monals and other pheasants. Some of the other species include Barking Deer, Common Langur, Musk Deer, Himalayan Black Bear and Leopards.
This Churdhar sanctuary is good for trekking as it offers many trekking options to the adventure freaks. The best time for trekking is during summer and early winter. The places from where trekking is enjoyable include Sarain, Pubahal and Nohra.
